Take A Kid to College Day! at Claremont McKenna College
The Berger Institute for Work, Family, and Children at Claremont McKenna College invited select 5th grade girls and boys from Mountain View Elementary School in Claremont, CA to participate in an afternoon at Claremont McKenna College for the "Take a Kid to College Day."
The goal of this event was to expose children of "at-risk" circumstances to the college experience and to inspire these children to think about college and their futures. These are children who may not have ever been exposed to college due to their circumstances and their parent's circumstances and we want them to understand that they can go to college and pursue their dreams. One chief aim was to provide information to these children informally through undergraduate students and faculty, including availability of resources for college planning and funding. The major objective of activities was to encourage children to think about about how their dreams for the future - for college and work - can be achieved. The activities were mean to be fun and interactive to allow for conversation and engage children in thinking about college and work in ways they may not have done before.
The girls and boys participated in interactive learning activities, which will lead this New Generation at Work towards a future where they can participate fully in work, family, and community. Volunteer undergraduate students (supervised by Berger Institute Staff) served as role models to inspire the girls and boys to strive to attain their full potential. Moreover, girls and boys discovered school can better prepare them for a wide variety of jobs and the skills needed to be hired in specific professions.
