About The Campaign For Claremont McKenna

Campaign Initiatives: The Robert Day Scholars Program

In September 2007, Trustee Robert Day ’65 made a personal commitment of $200 million to create the Robert Day Scholars Program. This was the largest recorded gift to a liberal arts institution, the largest gift in the field of finance and economics, and among the top 20 largest gifts ever given to a college or university.

Along with Day’s gift also came the vision for a new program and a new Master of Finance degree.

The Robert Day Scholars combines a rigorous curriculum—in economics and finance, accounting, and organizational psychology—with a rich co-curricular component. The program builds on CMC’s liberal arts tradition and will develop students from all majors who demonstrate strong leadership potential, preparing them for positions in business, law, government, and not-for-profit organizations.

Under the auspices of the Robert Day Scholars Program, CMC will add faculty members who specialize in business, government, and not-for-profit organizations. The program will also fund an increased internship program, enhancement of Career Services, and financial aid for students in the program.

In this way, the Robert Day Scholars Program builds on Claremont McKenna’s mission in three important ways:

  • It reinforces the College’s strengths in economics, finance, and accounting;
  • It reflects Claremont McKenna’s aim to prepare students entering the world of commerce and public affairs; and
  • It reinforces Claremont McKenna’s long tradition of developing leaders.

Liberal Arts, Enhanced

The Robert Day Scholars Program strives to identify leaders early, at the undergraduate level. By seeking students with a solid liberal arts education, then building on that background with courses in finance, economics, accounting, and organizational psychology, the program endeavors to produce leaders with both a broad perspective and a deep understanding of financial economics.

The program also goes beyond the standard “professional school” approach. It begins with the unique application process, which employs interviews and group exercises to identify leadership potential. Then, through an intensive curriculum and a host of co-curricular activities, Robert Day Scholars delve deeply into more profound areas of inquiry, such as leadership, motivation, judgment, and ethics. These are the intangible, yet undeniable, qualities at the core of great leaders and are critical tools for Robert Day Scholars as they enter the world’s top financial firms, corporations, law firms, government, and not-for-profit organizations.
