Faculty Governance

In addition to performing the teaching duties customarily performed by college faculties, faculty of Claremont McKenna College participate in their self-governance as well as the governance of the College. Among the functions of the faculty are these:

To initiate and recommend to the Trustees, or to approve directly or through its constituted committees, all policies and actions directly affecting the curriculum and other educational matters, student-related extracurricular matters, and intercollegiate matters.

To establish its own procedures for Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure subject to approval by the Board of Trustees.

To recommend to the Board of Trustees, after certification by the Registrar, candidates for degrees to be conferred by the College.

To advise on questions addressed to the Faculty by the Board of Trustees, and to elect, when so requested by the Board of Trustees, special committees or representatives to advise with committees of the Board on any matter affecting the life and functions of the College.

To consider any question which concerns the College brought to it by any member of the Faculty.

All faculty are expected to attend Faculty Meetings whenever possible. Regular meetings of the Faculty are called by the Dean of the Faculty at least four regularly scheduled times per term during the academic year, unless canceled for lack of business, and informal meetings of the faculty may occur whenever it seems desirable or Faculty meetings occur are explained at length in the Faculty Handbook.

Committees

One aspect of governance is committee service. Faculty may be called to serve on three types of committees: Faculty Committees, Special Committees, and Intercollegiate Committees.

Faculty committees include Academic Standards, Administration, Admission and Financial Aid, Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure, Curriculum, Institutional Review Board for Human and Animal Subjects Research, International Programs, and National Awards.

Special Committees include Athenaeum Advisory, Athletic Advisory, College Judiciary board, Environmental Concerns, ROTC Advisory, and Student Recruitment.

Intercollegiate Committees include Academic Deans, Admission Officers, Athletic Council, Business and Financial Officers, Council of the Claremont Colleges, Development Officers, Information Technology Committee, Joint Science APT, Registrars, Committee on Religious Affairs, Graduate Council, Honnold Library, Student Deans, and Joint Physical Education ARP.

CMC Faculty Committees

The President and the Dean of the Faculty are ex-officio members of all faculty committees. Tenured (or tenure-track) faculty with administrative appointments are listed as faculty. Ex officio members of the administration are listed as staff. Several committees have elected members and student members that will be added later.

Standing Committees of the Faculty
Standing committees are constituted by action of the faculty, report to the faculty, make recommendations for faculty action, make recommendations to the College administration on academic issues, and must have a majority of their membership drawn from the faculty. They may be chaired by the President, one of the academic deans, or members of the faculty.

College committees are constituted by the administration or as a result of initiatives of the faculty. They make policy recommendations outside the areas of academic issues and faculty personnel issues to either the administration, the faculty, or both.
