The "Each One Teach One" Gender Studies Sequence: a student teaching her informants, NIRMAN 2006
The NIRMAN Study Abroad Director and the NIRMAN Resident Director will help you in every aspect of your program, including with academic and personal advice. They will monitor your progress, meet you periodically, and be available whenever you need help.

Housing is provided by NIRMAN in a traditional but clean and comfortable guesthouse on a small campus where other international students and NIRMAN workers also live. For two weeks mid-session, students are taken on trips to other places in India where they live with local families.

Food Three meals a day and two on weekends are provided at the NIRMAN guesthouse. These are varied and nutritious. Students are welcome to eat out, and recommended places are listed.

Orientation is mandatory and consists of a week-long session that familiarises students with information that makes their stay in India a smooth one. The session covers topics such as modern India, everyday life in India, gender, religion, salient differences between Indian and US procedures, academic expectations, living and eating in Varanasi, and emergency procedures. The session includes walks and visits to the dhobi (washerman) and the rickshawalla (rickshaw driver).
Medical insurance is the student's responsibility. Medical care of every type is available near NIRMAN, and all help in emergencies as well as everyday ailments will be provided by the staff.

Passports and visas are the student's responsibility. NIRMAN will send information and relevant paperwork for the visa upon admission.

Services for students with disabilities At present, there are none that are across the board. Please enquire for specific cases.

Trips to other places During the semester, students will have required trips to Agra, Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mussoorie, Orchha, and Udaipur to round off their learning of Indian history, politics, and modernity. In addition, students are encouraged to travel on their own for two weeks.
