THE FELLOWS' TURN
JOHN McINTIRE '91

With a diversity of events to be envied by the largest universities, the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum provides a unique forum for entertainment, reflection, and intellectual exchange unmatched in accessibility. From art showcases and cultural celebrations to informed debate and afternoon teas, the range of activities is surpassed only by the variety of audiences they attract. Indeed, the Claremont community is truly blessed by the Athenaeum's broad spectrum of programs and distinguished guests.

Perhaps it is appropriate to begin the year with a gentle but firm reminder. As befits the elegant and dignified Athenaeum atmosphere, we ask that you conduct yourself appropriately. Please observe the Athenaeum dress code, which prohibits jeans or shorts. Consider your Athenaeum experiences an ideal opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal, exchange ideas, and dress to impress.

As the new Athenaeum student fellows, Laura Gilmore and I invite you to indulge in the feast of opportunities the Athenaeum affords. Follow your curiosity and attend an assortment of events. The Athenaeum is yours to enjoy. We welcome suggestions. We are liaisons for your interests. Don't hesitate to contact us at our Athenaeum extension, x8244.

LAURA GILMORE '89

As the semester comes to a close, we are all looking back wondering where the time went. We are also beginning to look forward, not only toward winter break, but toward next semester. As Athenaeum fellows, John and I hope that the Athenaeum brings as many exciting and successful events next semester as we have done this semester.

The Athenaeum provides the ideal atmosphere for students and faculty alike to exchange ideas, broaden intellectual and social horizons,, and, of course, enjoy sumptuous meals.

Dorm dinners, Athenaeum teas, special events, books and periodicals in Parents Library, and-beginning next semester-social events in the evenings- all contribute to the Athenaeum experience. We encourage everyone to make the most of these opportunities while at CMC. The Athenaeum is yours to enjoy.

If you have any ideas, comments, or suggestions, feel free to contact John McIntire or me at x8244, or our dorm extensions, or any student member of the Athenaeum Advisory Committee.

Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum

The Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum was conceived as a place where students and faculty could gather for intellectual discourse in an intimate and relaxed setting and integrate their academic and social lives. Public programs are scheduled Monday through Thursday during the academic year and are publicized through the bi-weekly newsletter, The Fortnightly.

While events are primarily for students, the Athenaeum hosts lunches, dinners, and receptions for academic classes, student organizations, and official functions of the College.
