Asia Expert David Lampton To Discuss U.S.-China Relations

David Lampton, director of Chinese Studies at The Nixon Center, Washington, D.C., and the Sadie Hyman Professor of China Studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), will visit the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum on Thursday, Oct. 13 to discuss "U.S.-China Relations in the Context of Growing PRC Power." The public portion of the event begins at 6:45 p.m. Seating is free, on a first-come basis.

Lampton, who wrote Same Bed, Different Dreams: Managing U.S.-China Relations, 19892000 (2002), and edited The Making of Chinese Foreign and Security Policy in the Era of Reform, 1978-2000 (2001), has written numerous articles and books dealing with contemporary China and U.S.-China relations. Prior to joining The Nixon Center, Lampton was president of the National Committee on United States-China Relations in New York City, the nation's oldest nonprofit educational organization devoted to enhancing mutual understanding among the peoples of the United States and China's mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

Lampton, a native of California, received his undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees from Stanford University, and an honorary doctorate from the Institute of Far Eastern Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, one of the largest academic centers for comprehensive research work on East Asia and Russia's relations with the region. He also consults with various foundations, corporations and government agencies, as well as the Aspen Institute Congressional Program, which convenes high-level conferences among legislators and internationally recognized academics, experts, and leaders, for exploration of various policy alternatives.

In addition to his books and scholarly papers, Lampton is a frequent media commentator, with appearances including News Hour with Jim Lehrer, This Week with David Brinkley, the Today Show, ABC Evening News, and CNN.
