The students of the Mary B. Eyre Children's School's will break ground for their new campus, to be located at 6th Street and Claremont Boulevard in Claremont, at 9:30 am on Wednesday, October 28, 1998.
Students will arrive at the ceremony with shovels and pails in hand ready to commence construction on the $2.2 million project. The new Mary B. Eyre campus will include four individual cottages, each housing a different age group, playgrounds, picnic areas, and parking.
The school for 90 children, ages 2 to 7, was founded in 1937. Claremont McKenna College took over management of the children's school in 1997. The marriage between the institutions will create opportunities for expanded programs for both young children as well as for the students and faculty at The Claremont Colleges.
"After spending many years in old buildings divided by busy streets, we are very excited to be building a brand new campus," says Janet Dreyer, director of the Mary B. Eyre Children's School. "I've seen the plans and the new campus will be beautiful and provide a first rate learning environment for our children."
The change in locale will not change the primary mission of providing the best possible education for children during their critical early learning years. Furthermore, the school will continue to function as a research laboratory for early childhood development and education and for research on the issues of work, family, and children through a new research institute to be established at Claremont McKenna College.
