CMC Professor to Speak on Space Colonization at American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics

Claremont McKenna College Professor Emeritus Harvey Wichman will deliver a speech entitled "Human Factors in Life on the Moon" on Saturday, May 6 at 8:30 a.m. at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics at aerospace company TRW's Redondo Beach location.

His presentation is a part of a spring symposium on "Technologies for the New Millennium" hosted by AIAA. Wichman's lecture, "Human Factors in Life on the Moon" will be presented on Saturday in Session III of the symposium, titled "Return to the Moon." Wichman argues that before humans take on colonization of Mars they should acquaint themselves with the practical challenges of living on our much closer, more accessible moon. Wichman will address issues that confront moon colony planners such as lower gravity, higher radiation and the need to seal off building sections in case of depressurization. He will discuss the necessity of innovations such as gigantic moon-fields of solar panels reflecting the sun's energy to Earth, increasing the sustainability of a heavily populated planet Earth.

Harvey Wichman is Professor Emeritus at Claremont McKenna College and Professor of Psychology at Claremont Graduate University. He is Director of CMC's Aerospace Psychology Laboratory. Trained in both neuroscience and social psychology, he conducts research on the effects of working and living in severe environments. He is the author of the book Human Factors in the Design of Spacecraft, and has published articles in journals such as the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Space Life Sciences, Human Factors, and Aviation, Space, and Environmental Medicine.
