CMCAA Cosponsors Activities for Alumni-in-Residence After presenting the Class of 2008 banner at the freshmen orientation convocation, CMCAA sponsored its first class identification activity of the year—the Freshmen Ice Cream Social. On Sept. 3, new students joined local alumni who scooped ice cream into Alumni Association Class of 2008 cappuccino mugs. CMCAA and the Student Alumni Relations Council also cosponsored one of CMC's new traditions, McKenna Day, which once again drew crowds to snack at Collins Dining Hall on Oct. 10. Several hundred students sported all varieties and styles of plaid at a Tartan Snack in commemoration of what would have been our late Founding Trustee's 97th birthday. Those wearing tartan qualified for a chance to win airfare to Scotland. The next day, Donald McKenna's grandson, Bruce, led a lively discussion during the WordsWorth Society Lunch. Students were given priority in offering an interesting word of their choice and sharing its history, derivation, meaning, and usage. It was an outstanding, enjoyable way to relive one of Donald McKenna's favorite on-campus activities. Into Africa: Aug. 31-Sept. 18, 2005; Zambia, Botswana, South Africa Vice President for Alumni Relations John Faranda '79 invites you to join with fellow CMC travelers on an amazing trip to the continent of Africa. Start your safari on the banks of the Zambezi River, near Victoria Falls, and then visit Botswana, one of Africa's least populated countries, to experience the real bush. Next, traverse the Okavango Delta, one of the world's most unique aquatic environments, and continue on to the Savute Channel and Cape Town. The safari will feature luxury camps and lodges in the best game reserves in Africa. For questions regarding the itinerary, contact travel consultant Horst Engel at V.I.P. Travel, 800-266-1438. The group is limited to 18 participants. Contact the Office of Alumni Relations at 909-621-8097 if you are interested in joining this adventure! Parents Orientation Parents Club welcomed more than 500 parents and family members to campus for Parents Orientation in August. Already looking forward to its 2005 event, organizers request that guests complete provided orientation surveys. Results and suggestions will enhance future event planning. If you would like to offer your views on orientation, please visit the online survey at http://survey.claremontmckenna.edu. All Occasion Cake Program Personalized cakes can commemorate any occasion: a holiday surprise, an "A" on a midterm, winning the big game, completing a major project, or a simple, "We're thinking of you." Parents Club will help your student celebrate a special occasion away from home through the All-Occasion Cake Program. New this year is a flourless chocolate torte for eight (), decorated with fresh seasonal berries. Traditional bakery cakes—chocolate or white, with choice of Swiss chocolate or strawberries with whipped cream filling—also are available.
