CMS Women’s Water Polo Team Wins National Championship

CMS women’s water polo team brought home the Collegiate III National Championship of NCAA Division III colleges Sunday, May 6, after defeating the top-seeded University of Redlands in a 5-3 overtime victory at Redlands. This is the first national title for the Athenas since 1992.

On its way to the championship, the team also defeated Occidental in the semi-finals, and the University of California, Santa Cruz, Washington and Jefferson (Pa.), and Macalester in the preliminaries.

“I’m so proud of their teamwork and commitment,” said CMS Athletic Director Mike Sutton. “This was a special season for the players, the team, and the CMS program.”

The team is led by Michael Ashe, head coach, who was also named Coach of the Year, and Brian Vlasich, assistant coach.

CMS members of the All-Tournament Team include Kelly Freeman and Tara McGuire, 1st team, and Lauren Williams, 2nd team.
