Dan Calichman, Former LA Galaxy Captain Named Head Soccer Coach

Athletics director Michael Sutton has announced the appointment of Dan Calichman as head coach for men's soccer at CMS, the combined athletics program for Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps colleges. Calichman, who also will be an instructor of physical education and athletics, joins CMS on July 1.
Calichman's professional soccer career spans 12 years. He was captain and central defender of the Los Angeles Galaxy from 1996-98 and was voted best Major League Soccer defender by USA Today in 1996. He also played for two other MLS teams--the San Jose Earthquakes and the New England Revolution. He played for the United States National Team from 1997-98 and was the first and only American player to play in the J-League, Japan's professional soccer league.
"I'm really excited to return to the Division III environment, this time as a coach," he said.
Calichman graduated from Williams College with a bachelor's degree in history, where he was captain of the college's Division III soccer and lacrosse teams. He is one of the few professional players to have advanced directly from Division III soccer to a successful MLS career.
Calichman joins the CMS program from the American Global Soccer School in Glendale, Calif., where he served as head coach and technical director. He also is a spokesperson for the AYSO VIP Program for children with physical and mental challenges.
Sutton says Calichman brings with him a "wealth of knowledge of soccer and the soccer community, as well as great passion for the game, a dynamic personality, and firsthand understanding of the world of the Division III student-athlete."
Calichman joins the CMS program following a strong season that included seven All-SCIAC players, an All-American (Trevor Mutch '02), and second place in SCIAC with an 18-2 overall record. Stags soccer finished first in SCIAC 23 times in the last 34 years.
CMS competes in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and fields teams in all 19 SCIAC sports. CMS is a comprehensive department meeting the needs of its students through physical education, recreation, intramural competition and club sports.
