Dr. Nafis Sadik,
U.N. Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS

Dr. Nafis Sadik, special envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for HIV/AIDS in Asia and former executive director of the United Nations population fund, will speak at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16. The lecture is free and open to the public with seating on a first-come basis.
As director, Dr. Sadik was one of the highest-ranking women in the UN system and is a recognized leader in international maternal, child, and reproductive health, including family planning. As the Secretary-General of the International Conference on Population and Development, held in Cairo in 1994, she called for and received unanimous agreement to the approach of reproductive health that includes empowering women through education and economic opportunity. She has received numerous international awards and honors, including her selection as Laureate in the individual category, U.N. Population award, and awards from the leaders of Indonesia, Pakistan, and Egypt, as well as honorary degrees from the University of Michigan, and Johns Hopkins, Brown, and Duke universities.
She is a member of the Board of Governors of the Foundation for Human Development, a member of the South Asian Commission on the Asian Challenge, and serves on the boards of various national and international organizations, universities, and foundations. Dr. Sadik is also the author of numerous publications in the areas of reproductive health and family, population and development, women, and gender and development.
