Professor Lecture
Lessons From Lawrence of Arabia: Counterterrorism and Counterinsurgence in Today’s Middle East
Mary Pickford Auditorium, Bauer Center South
Jennifer Taw, Associate Professor, Government and International Relations
T.E. Lawrence, in his book Revolt in the Desert, describes his experiences rallying Arab tribes against their Turkish oppressors as part of Great Britain's WWI Middle East strategy. Lawrence sought to identify charismatic Arab leaders, appeal to local tribes, and bring them together to defeat the Turks. He was deeply ambivalent about his efforts. He fomented Arab nationalism even while knowing the British and French were unlikely to allow the tribes autonomy. He spoke Arabic, adopted his hosts' mannerisms, dressed in local garb, and admired the leaders with whom he fought, but he also always felt like an outsider and clearly believed himself to be superior to his hosts. He helped organize and lead an effective insurgency, but only with the support of the British conventional forces and the heft of British funding. He got a rush from warfare, but was exhausted and nearly driven mad by its deprivations. Fast forward to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the counterterrorism efforts against ISIL and its ilk and much of what Lawrence described still resonates today. Come join a conversation the students in Professor Taw's War seminar began in Fall 2014 and discover what contemporary US and allied efforts might learn from Revolt in the Desert. Don’t miss this discussion with Professor Taw, the 2014 Glenn R. Huntoon Jr. Teaching Award winner! This award is given annually to the faculty member voted by the entire student body as the most effective teacher. ___________________________________________________________________

Intro to Econ: Day One Freeberg Forum, Kravis Center Lower Courtyard
Eric Helland, William F. Podlich Professor of Economics and George R. Roberts Fellow
Perhaps the most exciting day for a young economist is the first time an economist tries to explain to them exactly what economics is all about. The opening lecture in most introductory economics courses is something of a rite of passage—the day students first start trying to “think like an economist.” Join Professor Eric Helland, as he replicates that first day and along the way discusses topics as diverse as AIDs in Africa, the location of milk in the supermarket, and why wine costs so much at restaurants. Professor Helland is an expert in law and economics and the 2014 G. David Huntoon Senior Teaching Award winner, chosen from a list of professors nominated by junior and senior students. He has had works published in the Journal of Legal Studies, Review of Economics and Statistics, and Journal of Environmental Economics and Management.

In the book, Lower tells the account of the role German women played in the Holocaust, and proves that they were more than just innocent housewives. In fact, hundreds of thousands of women were not only complacent to the horrific actions of the Third Reich, but were themselves brutal killers on the Nazi eastern front. ___________________________________________________________________
