Financial Economics Institute Examines Boundaries of SEC Regulation

Jonathan Macey, the Sam Harris Professor of Corporate Law, Corporate Finance, and Securities Law at Yale Law School, will be the keynote speaker for the Financial Economic Institute's Boundaries of SEC Regulation conference on Friday, Feb. 3 on the CGU campus, leading with an 8:15 a.m. registration and continental breakfast at the Burkle Building, and remarks by CMC President Pamela Gann.

In conjunction with the Journal of Corporate Finance, Friday's conference will bring together academics, policymakers, and practitioners to discuss the law and economics of financial market regulations, with emphasis on the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Sessions on regulatory impact, shareholder proposals and shareholder voting, disclosure regulation, and mutual fund governance will be included. Also featured will be presentations of accepted papers, selected in coordination with a special issue of the Journal of Corporate Finance"Boundaries of SEC Regulation"for which CMC's Harold Mulherin, the Don Freeberg Chair of Financial Economics, and Janet Kiholm Smith, the Von Tobel Professor of Economics and FEI director, served as editors.

"The conference fits the mission of FEI, which is to promote research and education in financial economics, and to tackle important public policy issues that affect financial markets," Smith says. "It also fits squarely within CMC's educational mission of integrating theory and practice. Additionally, given the recent increase in SEC scrutiny of U.S. business and expansion in both scope and scale of regulation of financial markets, it is a timely event."

Along with Macey, conference speakers include former SEC chief economists Larry Harris, Erik Sirri, and Susan Woodward, and Jennifer Bethel, who served as SEC's chief economist for the Division of Corporate Finance.

The Financial Economics Institute at Claremont McKenna College was established in 2004 to foster financial economics education and research in the context of the liberal arts environment at Claremont McKenna College.
