Gary Gilbert to Preside Over
Oldest Scholarly Society in
Field of Biblical Studies

Associate professor of religious studies Gary Gilbert has been named president of the Pacific Coast Region of the Society of Biblical Literature, the oldest and largest international scholarly membership organization in the field of biblical studies.
Founded in 1880, the Society has grown to more than 8,500 international members including teachers, students, religious leaders and individuals from all walks of life who share a mutual interest in the critical investigation of the Bible. The Society includes 11 regional bodies, including the Pacific Coast Region, that support the work of the national organization.
Gilbert becomes vice president of PCRSBL later this year, and will assume the position of president in 2011.
A graduate of Haverford College, he earned his master's and doctorate degrees at Columbia University. He specializes in ancient Judaismparticularly Jewish history and literature during the Roman period.
