Government Professor
Fred Lynch in New York Times,
on KCRW Discussing AARP

AARP's announcement last week that it would consider "modest" cuts in Social Security benefits has generated much discussion and backlash. Frederick R. Lynch, associate professor of government at CMC and an expert on AARP, has been in the media since then discussing AARP and their announcement, which some feel is setting the stage for cuts.
In an op-ed piece published today in the New York Times, titled "How AARP Can Get Its Groove Back," Lynch discusses what he calls an "identity crisis at AARP," citing the organizations' need to get back to basics and to take a strong position on benefits entitlements. Read the full New York Times opinion article here. On Tuesday, June 21, Lynch appeared on both KCRW's To The Point with Warren Olney and KPCC's AirTalk, with David Lazarus from the LA Times discussing AARP's position and its member's responses. Listen to KCRW's To The Point with Warren Olney here. Lynch comes into the conversation at 28:25 minutes. Listen to KPCC's AirTalk here.
Lynch's new book, One Nation Under AARP: The Fight Over Medicare, Social Security, and America's Future, has just been published by University of California Press. Learn more about the book here. Or watch a video of Lynch discussing the book here.
