Gregory Gallagher '07 Selected For CBYX Program in Germany

CMC student Gregory Gallagher '07 has been selected to participate in the 2007-2008 Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX), a scholarship program with a strong focus on cultural exchange that provides an understanding for everyday life, education, and professional training in Germany and in the United States.

Gallagher is one of 75 participants from more than 600 applicants chosen to take part in the CBYX academic work abroad program, jointly funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State under the authority of the Fulbright-Hays Act of 1961.

In Germany, the program is funded through the Administration of the Bundestag.

Gallagher, who is pursuing a career in performing arts administration, says there is a lack of programs that recognize the importance of intercultural training outside of academia and the professions. "CBYX is one of those rare opportunities," he says, "and I am grateful to be part of it."

"Greg is as solid and responsible a student as they come," says Charles Kamm, assistant professor of music at Scripps College who directs Gallagher in choir studies. "I think the CBYX Program will add to his unique array of strengths."

The CBYX Program is intended primarily for young adults in business, technical, vocational, and agricultural fields, although applicants from all fields are encouraged to apply. For American participants, the 12-month program begins in late July, and consists of two months of intensive German language training in Germany, four months classroom instruction at a German university or college of applied sciences, and a five-month internship in their career field.

Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 24 and U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the start of the program. Applicants not enrolled in a college or university should have well-defined career goals with related work experience, flexibility, good communication skills, diplomacy, and a strong sense of American identity. Previous knowledge of German is not required but recommended.

Those interested in applying for the 2008-2009 CBYX Program must do so by Dec. 1, 2007.
