History-Making Stags End Season At NCAA Playoffs

The CMS men's basketball team saw their season come to an end Thursday night with a loss on the road at Portland. The Lewis & Clark College Pioneers knocked the SCIAC champions out of the NCAA playoffs in the first round with a score of 81 to 59.

Though the Pioneers controlled the scoreboard, the Stags were able to control the tempo of the game during the first half. Their deliberate and strategic style of slowing down the game and running down the shot clock frustrated the Pioneers, who were accustomed to a more quickly-paced "run and gun" style. At four times in the first half, the Pioneers led by nine points, but the Stags rallied to come within two at the break.

However, the Pioneers were able to regroup, and they dominated the second half. Dave Cann shot the first basket to tie the score, but the Stags were never able to gain the lead. The other team broke away in the last eight minutes, outscoring the Stags 23 to 7.

In the last game of the season, it was the seniors who led the points for their team. Bob Donlan put up 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. B.J Jameson shot for 13, Dave Cann carried 9, and Isaac Newman-Gomez rounded out the top four with 8 points.

The CMS team made history getting to the playoffs, becoming the first team in SCIAC history to win 13 conference games when they beat Whittier 84-52 to win the conference title and advance to the NCAA regionals.
