The Game of Light Hits Claremont McKenna for Energy Savings

By Alissa Sandford

When administrative services staff members Lynn Price and Penny Drury were cooking up ways to parallel last summer’s Survivor campus conservation challenge, they spoofed one of America’s most popular board games and named the brand-new brainchild Conservationopoly.

In this newest undertaking (which might also be called: how-to-have-fun-while-flicking-off-the-lights-at-work), toy skull Wattson has dropped his Hawaiian duds for a smashing wardrobe of tux and top hat, and oversees a playing board that advances players who correctly guess the answers to weekly trivia questions.

Just like last year’s Survivor series, offices throughout the College have been divided into teams (by buildings and floors) for the competition. Team names are identified on “property” cards that members customize, and game pieces are invented by each of the players to advance around the board.

“We’ve also implemented Chance and Community Chest cards to spice things up a bit,” says Drury, CMC maintenance coordinator.

The longer-term objectives for Conservationopoly are really what is at the core of this and last year’s conservation program: to take advantage of and promote all opportunities to conserve. “The cost of electricity has effectively doubled in the past 18 months and might not be at its peak,” says administrative services director Tim Lopez. “We’re re-evaluating options since the payback period for changing out lighting is now half of what it used to be, making these projects much more appealing.

Survivor’s success last summer saw energy savings of up to 20 and 30 percent for some buildings on campus, Lopez says. “It would be fantastic if those teams could repeat those performances. And for those that saved 15 to 20 percent, it would be helpful if they would do better.”

As of yet, Lopez says there hasn’t been any discussion or predictions about blackouts on campus as things heat up, but with generators in place, transfer of power should occur with minimal interruption, he said.
