When confronting stresses of the day, remembering
the simple acronym QTIP may come in handy. Shorthand
for quit taking it personally, QTIP is a reminder
to not personalize events beyond our control, including such large-scale
annoyances as traffic. The reality is that stress has definite physiological
effects, just as each thought and action yields a chemical response.
Frequent negative feelings have potentially serious side effects.
QTIP techniques offer such guidelines as:
Play the role of a witness---watch how you act and respond to impersonal
events in your life.
After watching your responses, decide which negative emotion you
displayed the most.
Work to defuse the power of that emotion and the habits that cause
the response.
Becoming conscious of your responses, and then working to break
the unconscious cycle of negative emotional habit, you can assert
greater control over the chemicals your body produces. This will
help you reduce their negative effect on you.
