Celebrating a birthday away from home doesn't have to be a lonely experience for students separated from family and old friends. The CMC Parents Club All-Occasion Cake Program lets loved ones and classmates surprise students on their special day with a custom dessert and paper goods to share it with close friends.
Last year, 173 cakes were delivered though the all-occasion cake program, and orders are brisk so far this year. For $20, the staff at Bon Appetit bakes up an 8-inch, personalized chocolate or white birthday cake, with choice of Swiss chocolate or strawberries and whipped cream filling. The cakes await pick-up at Collins Dining Hall, accompanied by a "party pack" with paper plates, napkins, a plastic knife, forks, balloons and candles.
Not only are parents buying these cakes for their college-aged children, but students can use their flex dollars to purchase cakes for a friend. Those picking up the cakes sign a single-page contract, and a copy is mailed to the buyer, confirming its delivery.
Parents or friends of CMC students who'd like take advantage of the Parents Club All-Occasion Cake Program should contact the Parents Club office: 909-607-0449. Two-weeks advance notice is suggested when placing orders. Parents may arrange for either their child or a friend to pick up the cake. Orders may be paid with a check or credit card.

Adrian Weisberg '07 picks up a birthday cake that his mom ordered, in honor of his 19th birthday. Weisberg, who hails from Denver, Colo., says "the first birthday away from home is tough. Your family and your old friends aren't there." Predicting he will get "ponded" by his college buddies (a tradition involving the dunking of classmates in one of CMC's fountains), his bigger plan is to actually sleep through his birthday. "I have a debate tournament the weekend before, so I know I will be very tired afterward."
