Seeing Double

CMC Welcomes Two Double-Legacy
Students This Fall

At dinner, you couldn't get around hearing the stories: Dunkings in Seal Pond, musings on nightlife in Green Hall, cherished, one-on-one interactions with professors. When Erin Hurley '07 of Boise, Idaho, finally visited campus two years ago during her junior year in high school, all the stories about traditions and daily goings-on at CMC finally sprung to life. Her parents, Kathleen (Evans) '80 and Kelly Hurley '79 often talked about their alma mater, but "never pushed me in that direction," says Erin, one of two double-legacy students entering CMC. Coincidently, her mother, Kathleen (Evans) was the first woman to commit to enrollment at CMC when the College went co-ed. Erin Hurley is joined this fall by Christopher Davis of Los Gatos, Calif., whose parents Nancy (Nelson) '80 and George Davis '80 also did their share of CMC reminiscing.

"You grow up hearing about these things, so it was so cool to actually see them for myself," says Erin, who plans to follow in her father's footsteps and major in biology, then apply for medical school. During a recent revisit to the campus, she says she and her father were trying to figure out whether she may have even been assigned his old room in Green Hall. "That would be pretty exciting!" she said. They also visited with David Sadava, the Pritzker Family Foundation Professor of Biology, who was a favorite professor. "He remembered my dad, and we talked about my own plans for med school," Hurley says. Another stop was at the athletics department "since I was really interested in the cross-country program," she says. Not surprisingly, both of Hurley's parents were on the varsity track and cross-country teams while at CMC.

So what was the reaction when she told her parents she'd selected CMC over other competitors, including Scripps? "They said they were shocked, but they said that after visiting the campus, they knew I would choose CMC," Erin says laughing.

Stories of CMC, as well as all of The Claremont Colleges, also flew around the dinner table at the Davis house. Chris Davis' cousin was a CMC student last year, and his grandparents went to Pomona and Scripps colleges. "When my family gets together we always talk about it. There are lots of stories," he says. Because of the familial connections, he'd already been a frequent visitor to campus before applying to CMC for the fall 2003 semester.

But it wasn't his familiarity with the College that necessarily motivated him to enroll. Instead, "I was definitely interested in the academics," says Chris, an econ major. "I knew that I could study on the weekdays and still have things to do on campus, and in the area, on weekends. Plus, I wanted to play football, so coming to CMC made it easier to get into athletics."
