CUC to break ground
on new Health & Wellness building

By Marcy Rothenberg

Roads and walkways on CMC's southwestern perimeter will be blocked at times as ground is broken for a new $7 million, 22,500 square-foot Claremont University Consortium health and wellness services complex.

The structure, to be built at the southeast corner of Eighth Street and Dartmouth, will include a 1,540-square-foot health and education outreach building, a 6,380-square-foot health services building, a 3,890-square-foot building to house the Monsour Counseling Center, 1,460 square feet of shared space, and another 4,050 square feet of second-floor "shell space" — available for lease to CUC and other Claremont Colleges looking for expansion room. (Not reflected in those figures is footage reserved for other "planned" spaces, such as hallways and restrooms.)

The project will be funded as much as possible through receipt of gifts from major donors, explained John Beckman, chief administrative officer for CUC. Already, he reports, nearly $2 million in gifts and pledges have been received. Any remaining costs will be covered by funds from a $10 million bond fund established to cover CUC deferred maintenance needs. "Obviously, the more we raise in donations, the less we'll have to pull from that fund," he said, explaining that The Claremont Colleges' presidents are currently contacting prospective donors to line up additional funding for the project.

First on the construction agenda, according to Beckman, is demolition of the old Faculty House, slated for June 2004. "We'll be determining how and when traffic will be rerouted once we get further into the project, but we're going to do everything possible to keep roads and walkways open as long as possible, and keep the shut-down time to a minimum." Reconfiguration of the roadway "Y" at College Way and Columbia will precede the start of construction on the new complex, which is planned for fall 2004.

Summertime construction impacts will be intensified, Beckman added, as Pomona College also will be building a new parking lot in an area adjacent to the new health and counseling services construction site.

When completed, the two-level, multi-service complex will provide an inviting environment for students at The Claremont Colleges who seek out health and counseling services. The tile-roofed complex will feature contemporary, open interior spaces, with large windows offering views into open-air landscaped courtyards designed to foster an atmosphere of serenity.

"It's going to be a bit noisy and a bit dusty for a while," Beckman acknowledged, "but the end result will be a facility that can serve a number of important purposes for students in our colleges."

Targeted completion is expected no later than June 30, 2005, Beckman promised, "in plenty of time for the 2005-06 school year."
