Taryn Benarroch '05 will perform with the Bourgas Opera-Philharmonic Society in Bulgaria this summer during a one-month international opera workshop for students who have professional singing aspirations. Culminating the workshop, which began in late June, will be Benarroch's singing part in Mozart's final opera, Die Zauberfloete, July 17 and 18, at the Bourgas Opera House.
The workshop furnishes operatic aspirants who have performance experience with professional orchestras under international conductors in a theater setting. A crucial middle step between college performance and the professional realm, the opera is "fully staged and over an orchestra, which is an invaluable opportunity for a student," Benarroch says.
A government and music dual major, Benarroch decided against enrolling in the University of Southern California's school of music in favor of CMC, for the sake of a well-rounded education. She studied abroad in Milan in the fall of 2003, where she took voice lessons and sang in a conservatory workshop. During the academic year, she takes voice classes and sings in the Pomona College Choir.
The international workshop, which emphasizes worldwide networking between singers and conductors, has helped up to 50 percent of singers receive professional engagement offers. As for her future plans Benarroch says, "If I could sing for the rest of my life and get paid for it, I would."
