Gould Center for Humanistic Studies

The Gould Center announced its summer research fellowships for 2007:

  • Dr. Adam Bradley, department of literature, to complete the first full-length critical study of the literary career of Ralph Ellison, author of Invisible Man.
  • Dr. Gary Hamburg, Otho M. Behr Professor of European History, for work on a book, under contract with Yale University Press, that explores the influence of religious and secular thinkers on Russian political thought.
  • Dr. James H. Nichols Jr., department of government, will commence a study of the Roman imperial historian Cornelius Tacitus and his influence on Machiavelli and Montesquieu.
  • Dr. Suzanne Obdrzalek, department of philosophy/religious studies, plans to extend her current research on the interrelation between problems concerning ethics and knowledge in classical antiquity.

Keck Center for International and Strategic Studies

The Keck Center is sponsoring two field research trips in May:

  • From May 18-26, six students will travel to Prague with Professor Hilary Appel. Students will meet with Czech politicians and officials, interview European Union diplomats, and attend lectures by Czech scholars, in order to investigate some of the major issues confronting this society as it evolves from a former communist state to a democratic, capitalist country in the European Union.
  • At the same time, six students will travel to Seoul with Professor Chae-Jin Lee. Students will have opportunities to attend lectures by Korean scholars and diplomats, interview Korean government officials, have discussions with Korean students, and visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Assembly, a college, Pannunjom (a truce village), and the Korean War Museum.

Kravis Leadership Institute

  • Jay Conger will present at a conference May 9 at the National Institute of Health, Washington, D.C., on the distinctive competencies of effective leaders.
  • The Center for Collaborative Leadership, College of Management at University of Massachusetts, Boston, will use Barbara H. Ascher's article, "The Realistic Application of Transformational or Authentic Leadership Theories to the Workplace," in their Emerging Leaders Program session on May 10.
  • Jay Conger also will present a lecture on leadership and persuasion skills at the Leadership Academy Program for local Claremont community leaders on May 15.
  • Conger will present on trends in networking research and 360 feedback at the Center for Effective Organizations Annual Conference at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles on May 16.
  • KLI will again sponsor two students to attend a week-long national session of LeaderShape this summer. This "Leading with Integrity" program takes place just outside Champaign, Ill.
