The William Wagner '08 memorial barbecue area was dedicated on Saturday, Sept. 15, as the CMS Stags football team, parents, and current students remembered William Wagner, an accomplished student-athlete whose unexpected death last February created an impact throughout The Colleges.
CMS Director of Athletics Mike Sutton '76 noted during dedication remarks that he was sure William would have enjoyed the event; the young athlete, Sutton recalled, "never met a barbecue he didn't like."
The barbecue area in Wagner's honor overlooks Zinda Field, a fitting place where the CMC student enjoyed playing football with friends and teammates. Former roommate and childhood friend Andy Sinclair '08 recalled for others how Wagner "always made the most of each minute, of every day."
Along with picnic tables, barbecues, and extra set-up tables, the northeast corner of Zinda Field also will enjoy a little more shade, thanks to a California redwood that was planted in Wagner's honor.
Following Saturday's ceremony, CMS football teammates left to prepare for the night's game against the University of Puget Sound—but not before breaking in the new barbecues with Stags parents and friends.
A commemorative plaque resting within the area reads: William Wagner '08, Wonderful son, beloved brother, great teammate, friend of so many, September 15, 2007. Stag Love.
