Saving more energy than their 5-C peers, CMCers take home the Green Cup

Claremont McKenna has been named the winner of the Dorm Energy Challenge, a month-long competition between The Claremont Colleges to reduce student energy consumption and raise awareness about global warming.

During November 2007, students were asked to sign sustainability pledges, promising to take energy-saving steps, such as walking instead of using cars and printing papers double-sided. Many participants posted their pledges on their doors—reminders not only to themselves to think green, but classmates as well.

To measure energy reduction, student organizers teamed with members of the Claremont University Consortium, which tracks and handles utility usage for the campuses. Reductions for each campus ranked as follows:

  • Claremont McKenna College: -14.14%
  • Scripps College: -7.57%
  • Harvey Mudd College: -7.52%
  • Pomona College: -5.61%
  • Pitzer College: +.257%

Results of the competition were announced at Power Down/Get Down, a 5-C, carbon-neutral party that featured musical talent from all schools. Representatives from CMC were awarded a potted cactus nicknamed the Green Cup, now residing in the entryway to Collins Dining Hall.

The event was organized by members of the Environmental Crusaders, a CMC student environmental group.
