Keck Center to Host Two-Day
Conference on China, April 6-7

The Keck Center for International and Strategic Studies at CMC will host a two-day Conference on China, April 6-7, 2011, featuring a number of scholar-panelists, and moderated by Keck Center director Minxin Pei, the Tom and Margot Pritzker '72 Professor of Government; Richard Burdekin, the Jonathan B. Lovelace Professor of Economics at CMC; and CJ Lee, the Bank of America Professor of Pacific Basin Studies and professor of government at CMC.
The event will be held in the Founder's Room at Claremont McKenna College, and is open to the public. Reservations are required for meals as well as presentation seating. (The event is closed to the media.)
Dr. Francis Fukuyama, SAIS Foreign Policy Institute Senior Fellow (Johns Hopkins University), will give the inaugural lecture at the event's opening dinner at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6 at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum. A reception will precede the dinner at 5:30, followed by Fukuyama's remarks, after the meal, at 6:45.
The conference continues Thursday, April 7, with the following sessions:

8:10-9:15 a.m.: China's Domestic and Foreign Policy Challenges. Moderator: Minxin Pei
Speakers: Guoguang Wu, professor of political science at the University of Virgina; Ding Xueliang, professor of social sciences, University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong; and Zheng Yongnian, director, East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore.

9:15-10:20: Social Change and Stability in China Moderator: CJ Lee
Speakers: Jianrong Yu, professor, Institute of Rural Development, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Xueguang Zhou, professor of sociology, Stanford University; Yunxiang Yan, professor of Anthropology, UCLA.

10:30-11:30: Is China's Economic Reform Dead? Moderator: Richard Burdekin
Speakers: Yasheng Huang, professor of International Management, the Sloan School, MIT; Zhiwu Chen, professor of finance, Yale School of Management, Yale University; Wei Zhang, lecturer in the Chinese Economy and Management, University of Cambridge.

11:30: Athenaeum Lunch ($15 per person for general public)

12:30 p.m.: Panel Discussion: Can China Innovate? Moderator: Yasheng Huang
Speakers: Weijian Shan, CEO, Pacific Alliance Group; Eric Li, managing director, Chengwei Ventures; Shaomin Li, professor of management, Old Dominion University

1:30 p.m.: Conference adjourns
