Peace & Excitement Sitar Concert: Nov. 19

A sitar recital featuring sitar maestro Narendra Mishra, accompanied by UCLA assistant adjunct associate professor Abhiman Kaushal, on the tabla (North Indian classical drums), will be held at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum. The concert is free and open to the public.

Themed Peace & Excitement, the concert is named for the "combination of excitement and peace that is the defining feature of Indian classical music, and equally of India today," says Nita Kumar, the Brown Family Professor of South Asian History at CMC. "We would also like to make this an Indian tribute to the U.S., for this particular historical moment's promise of peace in the future and certainly, excitement, right now."

Wednesday's recital will veer from traditional Athenaeum formatting instead following the Indian classical concert style, with seating on the floor and choices for others. Reservations are not required for the concert, but should be made to attend the dinner at 6 p.m. The evening menu will feature such Indian favorites as: pakoras, raita, palak paneer, lamb curry, chicken curry salad, potato salad, sliced fruit with mango and papaya, pappadam, and mango pudding.

Mishra gave his first concert at the age of 10, and has played throughout India and in Europe, winning ardent fans in Britain and Switzerland. His concert on Wednesday features Hindustanior North Indian classical music. It is his U.S. debut.
