Professor Bradley to Address L.A. Chapter of CMCAA

Adam Bradley, CMC assistant professor of literature, will be the featured guest at the Thursday, Jan. 27 meeting of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Claremont McKenna College Alumni Association, to be held at the Pasadena Central Public Library. Bradley's address, Editing Ellison, or How to Assemble a High-Literary Jigsaw Puzzle, begins at 7 p.m. A pre-event reception will be held at 6:30.
Bradley joined CMC from Dartmouth College, where he was the Thurgood Marshall Fellow and instructor in the English department. He received his doctorate from Harvard University in 2003, studying under Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Cornel West. Currently he is completing work as co-editor of the scholarly edition of Ralph Ellison's unfinished second novel alongside Ellison's literary executor, John Callahan. The volume (to be published in early 2006) presents the full measure of Ellison's literary efforts in the 40 years after Invisible Man. Bradley's talk will chronicle the challenges of editing what is undoubtedly one of the most complicated posthumous archives in modern literary history. Numbering thousands of pages and taking different forms over the decades, what Ellison left behind resembles a kind of high-literary jigsaw puzzle that calls on both editor and reader alike to piece together the disparate fragments of Ellison's final contribution to American literature.
Bradley is currently teaching courses in American Modernism and 20th Century Black Poetics. His research and teaching interests include 19th & 20th century American literature, African-American literature, and hip hop poetics.
The Pasadena Central Public Library is located at 285 E. Walnut St.
RSVPs should be made by Thursday, Jan. 20 to Jonella Ramsey: jonella.ramsey@claremontmckenna.edu, or by calling the Office of Alumni Relations, 909-621-8097.
