Professor Martin's
Literary Journey

Professor Jay Martin's exploration of Buddhist communities in rural China, Journey to Heavenly Mountain, has been nominated and chosen as a finalist for ForeWord magazine's Book of the Year prize for nonfiction. The prestigious prize, awarded to a book published by an independent publisher, and chosen by ForeWord editors, will be awarded May 31 in Los Angeles.
Martin, the Edward S. Gould Professor of Humanities, relates his experiences traveling through rural China in Journey to Heavenly Mountain. His encounters and observations create a clear picture of the ancient traditions and modern influences that shape life in the Buddhist communities he visited.
His newest book, The Education of John Dewey (Columbia University Press) is also receiving acclaim. Described in a recent New York Times review as "a good, well-paced read," Martin's lecture about the book, held recently at Johns Hopkins University, will air on C-SPAN's BookTV. The Dewey biography, featuring a wealth of previously unpublished documents, is Martin's twenty-first book.
