Professor Mulherin To Italy on Fulbright

J. Harold Mulherin, the Don and Lorraine Freeberg Professor of Economics, has been awarded a Fulbright grant to teach a course on mergers and acquisitions at the University of Tuscia in Viterbo, Italy, during the spring semester. According to Mulherin, the course will be closely patterned after the Topics in Corporate Finance class he teaches at CMC.

"It was quite a thrill to receive the Fulbright grant because it honors individuals with expertise in both teaching and research, the same emphasis applied at CMC," Mulherin says.

Mulherin, whose title at the University of Tuscia will be the Viterbo Distinguished Chair in Mergers and Acquisitions, says that in addition to teaching duties, he also looks forward to exploring the scenic region about an hour north of Rome. An avid cyclist, Mulherin plans to take along his Bianchi bicycle for weekend trips near the borders of Tuscany and Umbria.

The CMC professor joins approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who have received Fulbright grants this year to lecture and conduct research abroad. More than 87,000 U.S. and foreign scholars have participated in the Fulbright program since its inception in 1946.

Sponsored by the U.S. State Department, the Fulbright Program was proposed to Congress in 1945 by then-freshman Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. In the aftermath of World War II, Fulbright viewed the program as a much-needed vehicle for promoting "mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries of the world." Currently, the Fulbright Program offers opportunities to conduct career-launching study and research in more than 140 nations.
