Perspectives on War with Iraq

Return to Perspectives on War with Iraq

March 21, 2003

To the CMC Community,

Despite what I hope was a restful and enjoyable break for our students and faculty, I know we return to Claremont with concerns about world events. I wish to update you on CMC developments in this area.

This Tuesday, March 25, the Office of the Chaplains will offer a campuswide ecumenical prayer service, at noon in McAlister Center.

Also this Tuesday, CMC will host a symposium on the war in Iraq. This event will take place at 4:15 p.m. in McKenna Auditorium. I hope you will plan to attend this timely and important discussion. Panelists will include Edward Haley, W.M. Keck Foundation Chair of International Strategic Studies; Paul Kapur, assistant professor of government; Lt. Col. Michael Murphy, professor of military science; Kevin Arnold, Kravis Leadership Institute leadership educator and past commander, CMC ROTC unit; and Torrey Sun, vice president for student affairs. The symposium will be moderated by William Ascher, vice president and dean of the faculty.

We are fortunate to have a number of opportunities to continue these discussions inside and outside the classroom. Upcoming Athenaeum speakers include Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, discussing Human Rights and Ethical Globalization, Wednesday, March 26; Chong-Wook Chung, the Freeman Foundation Visiting Professor of Asian Affairs and the Republic of Korea's former ambassador to China, discussing New Leaders in Asia: Implications for America, Thursday, April 10; and Dr. Nafis Sadik, former executive director, UN Population Fund, on The Global War on Women, Wednesday, April 16. International Place continues its Thursday Lunch and Conversation series with a wide range of speakers, and preparations are underway for the 25th annual International Festival, Saturday, April 12.

Beginning today, the CMC web site features Perspectives on Iraq, which includes commentary, information on faculty experts, links, and updates. And in the unlikely event of a Southland-specific emergency, the College's Emergency Operations Center team is trained and prepared. For details on the College's emergency plan, visit our Emergency Planning web site.

As the days unfold, I hope we will remember that events half a world away reach very close to home for some of our colleagues and friends here in Claremont. Our thoughts are with those members of our community whose loved ones are in the armed forces, with the excellent and dedicated cadets and staff of our ROTC unit, and with our international students and faculty.

Sincerely,
Pamela Gann
