Student Athlete Michele Kee
2011 SCIAC Swimmer-of-the-Year and 200 Individual Medley record holder, Michele Kee ’14 has added yet another credit to her rapidly amounting list of accolades. The SCIAC Female Athlete-of-the-Week honor was given to the sophomore on January 24, following a 203-93 win over Occidental at home where she won two individual events and anchored a winning relay.
She helped lead the CMS Women’s Swimming and Diving team through their 70 season as they prepare for the SCIAC championships on February 19-21. “Michele made an impact when she arrived last season,” said coach Charlie Griffiths. “She’s been even better this year. Her dedication to training and added experience has made her a more versatile, and consequently, a more dangerous swimmer.” When asked what motivates her, Kee said, “Swimming with the team at CMS is definitely what motivates me the most. The coaches and my fellow teammates continually push me to do my best, even during the times I may doubt my own capabilities.”
As the team braces for the SCIAC championships, they reflect on their successful season, and their senior class. The Athenas have 6 seniors, and each of them have All-SCIAC performances to their creditnot to mention 29 All-American performances within the class. The team celebrated the senior class and their accomplishmentsalong with those of the men’s teamfollowing a February 5th victory over Redlands to round out their regular season. Coach Griffiths said, “Through the years, the Athenas have embodied synergy; the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. They train and compete together at a much higher level than they could individually. You see it every year in our relay results. That makes my job enjoyable because it is fun to coach people who see themselves as part of something bigger than themselves, and who get excited about group goals.”
