Student Filmmakers Support
CMC Annual Giving Efforts

Take five CMC student interns, some clever ideas, a video camera, and Facebook and what have you got an effective and innovative way to reach out to young alumni of the College.
Interns in the Office of Annual Giving have been creating and producing video this year in an effort to develop new channels of communication with alumni. Once the videos are produced, they "go viral" with the use of social media networks like Facebook and Twitter. Michael Chiu '11, Dominic Lo '11, Kelly Mulvihill '14, Max Zipperman '14, and Tyler McBrien '14 make up the video production team. Their creations this year include a video to promote the Athletics Sprint, Myths, Legends and Tall Tales of CMC, and "Who is the Stag?" The CMS Stag appears in almost every video produced by the interns.
Chiu got involved with the project after he saw a CMC video produced last year on Twitter. With an interest in video production since high school, Chiu welcomed the opportunity to hone his skills while working at CMC. The team works with an HV30 Camera"an older model, but HD quality," says Chiu, and Final Cut Pro editing software. Each video takes 20 hours or more from writing the script to casting, shooting and editing.
"I really like the level of responsibility given to interns here," says Chiu. "The videos are completely student created and produced. We are provided the independence to conceive of the idea and run with it. Clearly, these are student productions, but we've come a long way."
Chiu also notes that the chance to engage with alumni is valuable to students. "As an intern, we can get involved with and communicate with alumni. Our office is about more than just asking for donations, but is providing valuable opportunities to current students."
The most recent production promotes the Young Alumni Sprint, running through the month of April, which utilizes CMC alumni volunteers from the Classes of the 1990s and 2000s to network with their CMC peers and generate support for the College. The Sprint is unique in utilizing primarily electronic communication channels between young alumni.
Last year, the Sprint brought in 350 gifts and played a huge role in raising CMC's alumni participation rate. This year, the goal is 500 gifts. The Crown Challenge helps any gift make a bigger impact by offering a $1000 incentive gift from Steve Crown '74 for any 4-year recurring gift.
