Students Join Cast of Romeo and Juliet

Performances of Romeo and Juliet, a production of the Pomona College Department of Theater and Dance, will be held at 8 p.m. March 31-April 2, and at 2 p.m. April 2-3 in Pomona College's Seaver Theater.

A traditional interpretation directed by visiting professor of theater Boots Y. Pascual, the play features a cast of more than 25 students from The Claremont Colleges, including Jaideep Sahai '06 as Mercutio, a gang leader of the Montagues and kinsman to the Prince, and Philip Mayer '06 as Petruchio and Friar John.

Sahai, a theater and psychology dual major, says the role of Mercutio is just the right size: big, but not the lead. "Laurence Olivier turned down the role of Romeo in one of his productions to play Mercutio, because he is one of the more complex characters, the life of the party," says Sahai, who spent last semester at the London Dramatics Academy studying theater performance, including training in historical dance and stage combat.

Mayer, a government and literature dual major, performed in Harvey Mudd College's 2002 production of The Crucible and in the student-made film Housekeeping.

Tickets$5 for students, faculty, seniors, and staff, and $10 for general admission may be purchased at the Seaver box office, 909-621-8525.
