Swimmer and Author Haley Scott DeMaria to speak at Athenaeum
The Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum will host Haley Scott DeMaria on Sept. 14 for her talk, “Swimming Back from Paralysis.”
DeMaria’s book, What Through the OddsHaley Scott’s Journey of Faith and Triumph chronicles her journey from paralysis to recovery. The daughter of Charlotte and Stephen Scott ’66, DeMaria was a member of the Notre Dame swim team when the team bus was in an accident in January 1992. The accident left Haley paralyzed, two fellow swimmers and friends dead, and many others injured.
The book tells DeMaria’s story, from her painful and grueling physical therapy in West Bend, to her triumphant return to the Fighting Irish Swim Team in October 1993. For her courage and resilience, DeMaria won the Gene Autry Courage in Sport Award, Women of Distinction Award, Honda Award for Inspiration, and became a National Institute for Sport Fellow in 1994.
