Third Annual Atul Vyas Mathematics Lecture: Nov. 30

The mathematics department’s Third Annual Atul Vyas Memorial Lecture in Mathematics will be from 3 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30, Davidson Lecture Hall, on the CMC campus. This year’s talk, Geometric Modeling and Animation with Meshes, will introduce the audience to some concepts from a new research direction: discrete differential geometry.

Tuesday’s discussion features Peter Schroder, professor of computer science and applied and computational mathematics at the California Institute of Technology. A brief reception precedes the talk and refreshments will be provided.

For more information, contact mathematics department chair Mike O’Neill, 607-8336, or moneill@cmc.edu.

The lecture honors the memory of Atul Vyas, a CMC mathematics and physics major who died in a train crash on Sept. 12, 2008 in Chatsworth, Calif. The department’s annual lecture series in his memory is aimed at a general audience, on the creative application of abstract mathematical ideas.
