U.N. Peace-Keeping Operations the Focus of Keck Center Conference Friday, April 6th at CMC

Policy and diplomacy experts from the United Nations, U.S. State Department, NATO, and numerous institutes and academic institutions will gather at CMC on Friday, April 6, for a day-long conference on "The Future of U.N. Peace-Keeping Operations, hosted by The Keck Center for International and Strategic Studies.

The conference is free and open to the public (luncheon $10) but reservations are required. To register call the Keck Center at (909) 621-8213. Events will be held in Bauer Center.

Presentations will focus on The Balkans, Cambodia, Somalia, East Timor, and the future of and U.S. policy toward United Nations peace-keeping operations.

Speakers include Yasushi Akashi, Chairman of the Japan Center for Preventive Democracy and former U.N. Special Representative for Cambodia and for the former Yugoslavia, as well as Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs; Graham Day, U.S. Institute of Peace Senior Fellow and Administrator for the U.N. Transitional Administration in East Timor; William Durch, Henry L. Stimson Center Senior Associate and member of the Foreign Affairs Office and Policy Planning Staff, U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency; Margaret Jones, U.S. State Department Deputy Director for Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Operations and former Deputy Chief of the U.S. Embassy in Mauritius and member of the United States Mission to the U.N.; Paul Kapur, Post-Doctoral Fellow, Center for International Studies, University of Chicago, and Mellon Foundation Fellow; and General Jack Nix, U.S. Army (Ret.), Operations Officer for the NATO troops in Bosnia, Chief of Staff of the Allied Forces South during the Kosovo campaign, and military operations leader in Panama, Saudi Arabia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Macedonia. Speakers from The Claremont Colleges include CMC faculty members Edward Haley, Hilary Appel, Chae-Jin Lee, and Kevin Arnold; from Pomona College, David Elliott and David Arase; and Dean McHenry of Claremont Graduate University.
