Washington Program Celebrates 35th Anniversary: Oct. 17

The Washington, D.C., Internship Program at CMC will mark its 35th anniversary with a reception planned for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the historic Sewall-Belmont House on Capitol Hill.

Eighty guests, including many Program alumni and other CMC friends, are expected to join President Pamela Gann and Washington Program faculty in celebrating this milestone. Confirmed speakers include President Gann, Washington Program alumnus and CMC Trustee Congressman David Dreier '75, and Washington Program alumnus Mike Shear '90, national political correspondent for the Washington Post.

"For 35 years, this program has not only symbolized, but also has shaped the relationship between Claremont McKenna College and Washington, D.C.," says Professor Elizabeth Spalding, director of the CMC Washington Program. "Our current students and hundreds of alumni are part of a proud tradition of putting the College's mission to educate leaders in government and public policy into action."

The Washington Program, based in the nation's capital, focuses on all facets of domestic and international policy and is open to sophomores and juniors. This multi-component program includes a full-time internship in D.C., seminars in American politics and in U.S. foreign policy, an independent study project, and many other special events dealing with policymakers in Washington.

In recent years, CMC students have worked in government offices such as the White House and on Capitol Hill, at think tanks and advocacy groups, for consulting and public relations firms, and at mass media organizations.
