Course Requirements
1. Regular class attendance and participation (30 points)
I expect that you will come to class having read and thought about
the assigned material.
Four prominent scholars will be coming to campus in connection
with this course. Each will deliver a public lecture at the Athenaeum (see
the syllabus for dates). Attendance at the four Athenaeum talks is required.
Two will meet with the class after their talks. The other two will be present
in class to talk about specific issues related to the class and answer
questions.
2. Topic papers (80 points)
Specific materials have been assigned in preparation for the visits
by the four speakers. This assignment asks you to read the works written
by each speaker and write an analysis of at least one of the readings.
In your analysis you should identify key themes, including any information
on the origin, development, causes, and legacy of the messianic and/or
apocalyptic ideas and groups discussed. Each paper should be three to five
pages (double-spaced) in length. Please note: no extensions will be granted
for these papers.
3. Mid-Term exam (40 points)
You will have 24 hours to work on this out-of-class exam. The exam
is currently scheduled to be distributed on October 13th and will be due
back on October 14th.
4. Final exam (50 points)
The comprehensive exam is currently scheduled for Friday, December
17, 1999, at 2:00 pm.
