Israel Studies ProgramClaremont McKenna College students have the opportunity to experience the excitement of uncovering the past through an archaeological excavation in Akko, Israel. The ancient city of Akko, located approximately two kilometers from the present city, was inhabited from approximately 2000 BCE to the early Roman period (roughly second century CE), and was one of the major sea ports of the eastern Mediterranean. Through participation in the dig, students learn about the city’s history, and participate in the contemporary life of a city with a mixed Jewish and Arab population. Both the nature of the work and its location make this program particularly relevant to students in history, religious studies, Middle East Studies, and, because of the heritage preservation component, architecture and urban planning. Excavations usually take place during the month of July. For more information, contact Professor Gary Gilbert or visit: akkoarchaeology.org. |
