Regarding the Passing of Trustee Bart Evans '70

Dear CMC Community,

It is with heavy hearts that we must report the sad news that Trustee Bart Evans ’70 died on Wednesday, May 14, after a long fight against pancreatic cancer. We want his wife Andrea to know that our prayers and support are with her during this especially difficult time.

As many of you know, Bart has been the extraordinary force behind the growth of Claremont McKenna’s presence in the Silicon Valley. Without his founding of the Information Technology Advisory Board (ITAB), which he chaired from its inception, it is safe to say that we wouldn’t have our Silicon Valley Program today or the success of so many graduates who have entered that exciting industry.

Bart tirelessly leveraged his professional career for our benefit and opened so many doors for our students.

He trained as an engineer and spent his career in the field of applied sciences, but he also recognized the great value of the arts and humanities to society. He and Andrea have devoted much of their philanthropic work in support of these areas, including CMC. In 2005, they gave our College a named professorship in Literature, which is currently held by our renowned Frost scholar Robert Faggen.

They also opened their home to us on countless occasions for our networking trips, receptions, dinners, and alumni events in Northern California. Bart and Andrea have always made us feel so welcome; they exemplify what it means to belong to the CMC family.

We have been fortunate to count Bart among us, to learn from his example, to be inspired by his courage and poise during his illness. We wish only that we’d had more time to enjoy his good humor, his collegial spirit, and that boyish smile that said anything was possible.

Bart embodied a spirit of engagement and service that is truly exemplary. He infused everything he did—as an alumnus and Trustee, as a mentor, role model, and volunteer—with grace, energy, and great care.

Please join us not only in expressing condolences to Andrea and in saying goodbye to Bart, but also in thanking him for teaching us so much. His devotion to the College’s present and future has been profoundly moving, and the memory of it will continue to inspire us in the years to come.
