Biography

Jauhara Ferguson joins the Religious Studies Department as Assistant Professor of Religion: African American Religions. She studies the intersections of religion, race, and immigration in Black communities, with a particular focus on how Islam shapes Black experiences and identity formation. She has contributed to many projects examining issues related to religion and race including religious discrimination, hate crimes, policing, and health. Her current book project explores the extent to which U.S. Black Muslims consider Islam in their search for marriage partners, and how the process of marriage further develops Black and Muslim identities in the context of Muslim American community and the broader United States. Jauhara completed her PhD in Sociology at Rice University and her BA in International Studies and Religious Studies at Spelman College.
