The Well-Rounded Life

Mon, October 26, 2026
Dinner Program
Amy Berg '08

How would you describe a well-rounded life? It’s good to be well-rounded. When you do a lot of different things, when you work on expanding your horizons, when you dive into the fascinating diversity of the world around you—and even when you embrace being bad at some of what you do—your life will be a better one. In her talk, Amy Berg '08 will argue that well-rounded lives are often better, richer lives. Being well-rounded can make you more socially connected, happier, and more resilient. Berg shows why we should strive to be well-rounded—and how we can live this way.

Amy Berg ’08 is associate professor of philosophy at Rice University. She works on ethics and political philosophy, including the philosophy of well-being. Her book The Well-Rounded Life is forthcoming in November with Princeton University Press.

Before going to Rice, she taught at Oberlin College, Rhode Island College, and UNC Chapel Hill. She received a PhD in philosophy from UC San Diego and a BA in philosophy and government from Claremont McKenna College.

Berg’s work has been supported by the US Department of Education (the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship), the American Association of University Women (the American Fellowship), the National Endowment for the Humanities (a Summer Stipend), and the Marc Sanders Foundation (the Philosophy in Media Fellowship).

This program is a part of the Gould Center's Celebration of Coeducation Speaker Series.
